During her presentation about the importance of acquiring Open Spaces, Barbara Blankenship of the City of Santa Clarita had two students use a measuring tape to show the 9-ft. wing span of a Calif. condor. She explained that as houses and shopping centers are built, we are taking away the natural food sources and shelter for wildlife. A slide of the Santa Clara River as it would have been (full of water!) when the Tatavium Indians lived in our valley surprised the students as they are used to a seeing a dry "wash". (The Tatavium used a type of canoe to travel to the coast to trade with the Chumash. Try that now!) Tracking coyotes' route along corridor. (Local newspaper ariticle of mountain lion sighting in the Valencia industrial center.) Map of Open Space wildlife preservation areas in SCV that will remain undeveloped to serve as corridors for wildlife between developed and natural lands.
